Software and Tools
Software and Tools
By Adam Stitzer
Web Design, above all, takes experience. One could have the fastest computer around and every last piece of software available, and still not have the know-how to produce anything without the experience required for web design. As a computer guy, I often get asked, “Mac or PC?” The best answer is “Yes!” The truth is that it really doesn’t matter what tools are used, it’s who is using them.
The biggest question when deciding between the two is software availability. Usually, the same software, or something close, is available on either platform. Then the first requirement is a machine that can run the most common browsers used (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera). There is a slight advantage here to Mac users because they may run multiple versions of browsers at the same time, while Windows users must stick to only one version of IE at a time.
Web Design Applications
There are many graphics applications available, each with its’ own benefits and barriers. Adobe Photoshop is basically an industry standard, and pricy as well. But good software needs great programmers, and they aren’t cheap. Some other good programs are Macromedia Fireworks and Macromedia Flash, especially for vector design. Although some people like to stick to one or the other, it is possible to work between all of these.
Of course you will need an FTP Client of some sort. You could go for cheap and cheerful, and download a free FTP program such as WSFTP, or if you are really interested something really useful, try Macromedia Dreamweaver. Since this program can pretty much do it all (FTP, code editor, CSS style manager, etc.), it is becoming standard as well.
Hardware
Now I am sure you would like to know what kind of hardware you will need. For starters, you will need a monitor, preferably one that is at least 1024x768. Most designers work on dual monitors, because a lot of the software has many palettes and things that you will need, and screen real estate gets very important. If you are interested in doing it all or doing some memory eating 3d work, you will want to have a decent processor speed, and a good amount of memory, so that you can run all these programs at the same time. Otherwise, go for the better monitor. A good monitor is essential to every web designer.
When it comes to choosing your software and tools, it is very important to take the time and research because most of the software is very pricey.
